In this book, Dr. Abdullah Al Luhaidan expounds upon the idea of tolerance in Islam, and its different manifestations, by using examples from the biography of the Prophet Muhammad (sa) and supporting evidences from the Qur’an and the Sunnah. He synthesizes the concept of tolerance and al-walâ wal-barâ (loving and hating for the sake of Allah). Finally, he responds to the infamous ‘Clash of Civilizations’ thesis by arguing that Islam offers the solutions to some of the world’s greatest problems.

This short book examines the concept of tolerance in Islam. The Arabic word that is translated in English as ‘tolerance’ actually encompasses a much richer meaning than the idea of putting up with something grudgingly. It conveys a reciprocal sense of generosity, forgiveness, ease and smoothness. After discussing the nature of international relations from an Islamic perspective, Dr. Al Luhaidan goes on to explain the contentious concept of jihad in Islam. Citing historical sources, including testimonies from non-Muslim authors, he shows that Islam is not a religion of extremism, violence and forceful conversions. On the contrary, its long history attests to its tolerant nature.
