Publisher's Note: The Arabic dictionary "Al-Munjid fi al-Lughah", whose first edition was published in 1908, is too famous to need an introduction today. As soon as Father Louis Maalouf, S.J., compiled it in Beirut and the Catholic Press published it, writers and scholars rushed to praise it in newspapers and magazines, because it met the needs of students of the Arabic language, both ancient and modern, as it was at that time.
This encouraged its author and his successors to improve its editions and enrich it, year after year, with vocabulary and illustrations.
However, the Arab world's openness to Western civilizations, and the remarkable impetus that modern Arabic literature experienced in the twentieth century, prompted writers and scholars in Arab countries to invent many new words. These developments were too significant for us to be content today with mere improvements and additions. Therefore, it became necessary to create, alongside "Al-Munjid fi al-Lughah", which continues to serve those interested in ancient literature and language, a modern "Munjid", which we named "Al-Munjid fi al-Lughah al-Mu'asirah" (The Munjid of Contemporary Arabic Language). This new dictionary includes all the vocabulary and expressions needed by the twenty-first-century intellectual, even those derived from non-Arabic origins.
