Jāmiʿ al-ʿUlūm wa al-Ḥikam fī Sharḥ Khamseena Ḥadeethan min Jawāmiʿ al-Kalim | Abū al-Faraj ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Aḥmad al-Baghdādī al-Dimashqī, famously known as Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī
Jāmiʿ al-ʿUlūm wa al-Ḥikam is a book of ḥadīth, and its full name is Jāmiʿ al-ʿUlūm wa al-Ḥikam fī Sharḥ Khamseena Ḥadeethan min Jawāmiʿ al-Kalim. It was authored by Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Rajab al-Ḥanbalī (736-795 AH). The book is a commentary on al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah (The Forty Nawawi Ḥadīth) and is considered one of the best commentaries in terms of its comprehensive coverage of the ḥadīth, both its isnād (chain of narration) and matn (text). Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī compiled forty-two ḥadīth, organized and explained them, and named his work al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah. Later, Ibn Rajab added eight more ḥadīth to these forty, naming his work “Jāmiʿ al-ʿUlūm wa al-Ḥikam fī Sharḥ Khamseena Ḥadeethan min Jawāmiʿ al-Kalim.” The book is comprehensive, as Ibn Rajab gathered in it a wealth of knowledge that is easy for the layman to understand and indispensable for the student of knowledge. This includes discussions on the authenticity and weakness of ḥadīth and their derivations from primary sources, especially since its author was one of the eminent memorizers of ḥadīth. He also discussed matters of creed and rulings, demonstrating great skill and benefit. In summary, the book is a comprehensive collection of sciences and wisdom.
