Reason for Authoring the Book Taqrib al-Tahdhib

Ibn Hajar clarified in his introduction the reason for authoring this book, which was to abbreviate the large-sized book Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, while preserving the essence of scholars' judgments in al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil, so that the ruling for each narrator usually comes in just one line, including:

  • His lineage
  • His kunya (patronymic)
  • His laqab (epithet)
  • His generation
  • His ruling from the perspective of discrediting and attesting

The author compiled the ranks of narrators into 12 ranks, and their temporal layers into 12 layers, which makes it easy to refer to the book and understand the biographies quickly and accurately.

Illustrative Examples from the Book

  • Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Saksaki: Saduq (truthful) with weak memory (Fifth Layer).
  • Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal: Thiqah (trustworthy), Hafiz (memorizer), Faqih (jurist), Hujjah (authority), head of the Tenth Layer.
  • Abu Dhabyan al-Qurashi: Majhul (unknown) from the Second Layer.
