The Great Hamawiyyah Fatwa by Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – may Allah have mercy on him: a magnificent treatise affirming the creed of the Salaf regarding the attributes of Allah – may He be glorified and exalted – which he wrote in the year (698 AH) in response to a question he received from Hama, which was: "What do the venerable jurists, the imams of the religion, say about the verses of attributes, such as His saying, the Almighty: ﴿ The Most Merciful ascended the Throne ﴾ and His saying (Then He ascended the Throne) and His saying, the Almighty: ﴿ Then He ascended to the heaven while it was smoke ﴾ and other such verses, and the hadiths of attributes, such as His saying – peace and blessings be upon him – { Indeed, the hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful } and His saying – peace and blessings be upon him – { The Almighty will place His foot in the Hellfire } and other such matters, and what did the scholars say about it, and elaborate on this, may you be rewarded by Allah Almighty?"
Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Ibrahim bin Qasim – may Allah protect him – said in his book Al-Daleel ila al-Mutoon al-Ilmiyyah: "The Great Hamawiyyah Fatwa" by Sheikh al-Islam Taqi al-Din Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abd al-Halim ibn Abd al-Salam ibn Taymiyyah al-Harrani, who passed away in the year (728 AH) – may Allah have mercy on him – he wrote it in the year (698 AH) in response to a question he received from Hama, which was: "What do the venerable jurists, the imams of the religion, say about the verses of attributes, such as His saying, the Almighty: ﴿ The Most Merciful ascended the Throne ﴾ and His saying ﴿Then He ascended the Throne ﴾ and His saying, the Almighty: ﴿ Then He ascended to the heaven while it was smoke ﴾ and other such verses, and the hadiths of attributes, such as His saying – peace and blessings be upon him – { Indeed, the hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful } and His saying – peace and blessings be upon him – { The Almighty will place His foot in the Hellfire } and other such matters, and what did the scholars say about it, and elaborate on this, may you be rewarded by Allah Almighty."
So the Sheikh – may Allah have mercy on him – dictated the answer to this between Dhuhr and Asr, and as a result, well-known events and tribulations occurred, as mentioned in the biography of Sheikh al-Islam. The Sheikh – may Allah have mercy on him – wrote this fatwa twice, first writing it and then adding useful additions to it.
Objections to this fatwa: It was previously mentioned that when Sheikh Taqi al-Din – may Allah have mercy on him – dictated this fatwa, well-known events and tribulations occurred as a result, as mentioned in his biography. Among these was that one of the Shafi'i judges, Ahmad ibn Yahya ibn Ismail ibn Jahbal al-Kalabi al-Halabi then al-Dimashqi, who passed away in the year (733 AH), wrote a refutation of this fatwa, denying the direction for Allah Almighty. Al-Subki mentioned it in its entirety in Tabaqat al-Shafi'iyyah. It was also published by Al-Fajr Al-Jadeed Press in (1987 AD) under the supervision of Taha Al-Desouki Hubaishy, who named it "Al-Haqaiq Al-Jaliyyah fi Al-Radd ala Ibn Taymiyyah fima Awrada fi Al-Fatwa Al-Hamawiyyah" in (143) pages. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah responded to those who objected to the Hamawiyyah Fatwa in his book "Jawab Al-I'tiradat Al-Misriyyah ala Al-Fatwa Al-Hamawiyyah," but this book has not been found to date. Also, Sheikh Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Isa Al-Najdi, who passed away in the year (1327 AH) – may Allah have mercy on him – authored a book he named "Tanbih Al-Nabeeh wa Al-Ghabi fi Al-Radd ala Al-Madarisi wa Al-Halabi," and by Al-Halabi here is meant Ibn Jahbal, and Al-Madarisi is Muhammad ibn Sa'id Al-Madarisi, the author of the book "Al-Tanbih bi Al-Tanzeeh," published in (1309 AH). Sheikh Ibn Isa's book was published by Kurdistan Scientific Press in (1329 AH) along with the book Al-Radd Al-Wafir, and it was also published by Lina Publishing and Distribution Library in Damanhur in (1413 AH) in one volume totaling (314) pages.
