The science of Hadith terminology went through several stages in its emergence and development. Trustworthy scholars documented, studied, and authored works in it. Ibn Hajar was among those who dedicated themselves to this science, producing a vast number of works in its service. Even his adversaries, before his friends, acknowledged his great contribution to this vast field. Sheikh Al-Uthaymeen has provided an explanation of this book.

Nukhbat al-Fikr fi Mustalah Ahl al-Athar is one of the Hadith books authored by Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (773 AH – 852 AH). The author collected and presented everything that had been written before him on Hadith terminology, doing so concisely and briefly. Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani states in the book's introduction: "Indeed, works on the terminology of the people of Hadith have multiplied, some extensively detailed and others abridged. Some brethren asked me to summarize the important points for them, so I responded to their request, hoping to be included among those who follow that path."
