- Ighathat Al-Lahfan fi Masayid Al-Shaytan (Succouring the Distressed from the Traps of Satan) | Abi Abdullah Muhammad bin Abi Bakr bin Ayyub Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah
- Ighathat Al-Lahfan min Masayid Al-Shaytan (Succouring the Distressed from the Traps of Satan) is a book authored by Abi Abdullah Shams al-Din Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Zura'i al-Dimashqi, known as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (691-751 AH). He structured it into thirteen chapters, in which he presented human soul's diseases and their remedies, and the stratagems of Satan against humanity. It contains numerous chapters rich in benefits and great utility, and scholars have acknowledged his precedence in serving knowledge and defining religion for Muslims.
- Book Topics
- The author divided his book into 13 chapters, which are:
- On the division of hearts into sound, sick, and dead.
- On describing the reality of heart disease.
- On the division of remedies for heart diseases into natural and legal.
- On the fact that the life and illumination of the heart are the source of all good in it, and its death and darkness are the source of all evil and strife in it.
- On the fact that the life and health of the heart are only achieved by its perception of truth, its desire for it, and its preference for it over all else.
- On the fact that there is no happiness, pleasure, bliss, or righteousness for the heart except by its God being its worshipped, and being more beloved to it than anything else.
- On the fact that the Holy Quran contains the remedies for the heart and its treatment from all its ailments.
- On the purification of the heart.
- On the purity of the heart from its impurities and defilements.
- On the signs of heart disease and its health.
- On the treatment of heart disease from the self's dominance over it.
- On the treatment of heart disease by Satan.
- On the stratagems of Satan against the children of Adam.
- The author expanded on the last chapter, stating that he wrote the entire book for the sake of this chapter, and he thoroughly investigated all the stratagems of Satan against man that he was aware of.
- At the end, he wrote: "These are brief chapters on the cunning of Satan and his manipulation of this nation (meaning the Jews), by which the devout Muslim learns the extent of God's blessings upon him, and the blessings of knowledge and faith He has bestowed upon him, and by which whoever God wills guidance is guided, and from God is success and guidance to the right path."
- The Author's Methodology in His Book
- Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah's methodology here did not differ from his methodology in most of his books:
- Presenting Quranic verses and Prophetic hadiths as evidence and proof for what he says. For example, his citation of Allah's saying: ﴿But We let them and their fathers enjoy life until they forgot the Reminder and became a people lost﴾ [Al-Furqan: 18]. And his citation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ's hadith from Thawban who would say when something startled him: "Allah is my Lord, I associate nothing with Him" as proof of acknowledging monotheism as a refuge.
- Utilizing narratives from the Companions, Successors, and Imams in formulating the ideas in the book. Among these is what he narrated from Ibn Umar who said: "Perfecting ablution: cleansing."
- Providing examples, and often many of them, for the reader to benefit and apply what he reads to reality, making the application of the book easier. For instance, when mentioning the exaggeration in opposing the nations by the rabbis, he gave an example of the rabbis misleading their followers by claiming that certain foods are not permissible unless they use knowledge attributed to Moses, peace be upon him, which only they possess.
- Mentioning what is in some of his works that is related to the topic at hand, and re-presenting it without extensive elaboration, so as not to burden the reader, while still conveying the benefit. This includes the discussion on listening to music (sama'), for which he wrote a separate book titled "Al-Kalam 'ala Mas'alat al-Sama'". He also referred to it in Madarij al-Salikin.
- Great attention during his writing and formulation to the desired benefit of the book in helping Muslims and improving their condition, and not just compiling ideas or information.
- Great attention to the topic of stratagems and their rulings.
- Criticisms of the Book
- Elaboration and repetition on the topic of stratagems and their rulings: He was aware of this, and indeed intended it, for he wrote in his book: "Perhaps you will say: I have prolonged the discussion in this chapter greatly, and a mere اشاره would have sufficed. He replied: Rather, the matter is greater than what we have mentioned, and it is more deserving of prolongation, for the tribulation and ordeal of Islam have greatly increased from these two factions: the people of cunning, deception, and stratagem in practical matters, and the people of distortion, sophistry, and Qarmatianism in theoretical matters. Every corruption in religion – nay, even in this world – originates from these two groups..."
- Importance of the Book
- Ibn al-Qayyim clarified in it for the Muslim many of the misguided beliefs of groups so that he would not fall into them.
- Ibn al-Qayyim elucidated in it for the Muslim many of the stratagems used by disbelievers to mislead Muslims.
- Ibn al-Qayyim explained in the book the stratagems of man's primary enemy in misleading him, as Allah Almighty said: ﴿So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife."﴾ [Taha: 117].
- Ibn al-Qayyim extensively dealt with refuting doubts and misconceptions, which are used by misleaders, making it the best book in this regard.
- Difference Between It and Talbis Iblis
- Despite the unity of the subject between the book Ighathat Al-Lahfan fi Masayid Al-Shaytan and the book Talbis Iblis, there are fundamental differences between them:
- Ibn al-Jawzi preceded Ibn al-Qayyim in writing on this subject with his book Talbis Iblis.
- Ibn al-Jawzi also divided his book into 13 chapters, the first four of which were about the command to adhere to the community, the condemnation of innovations and innovators, and warning against the temptations and stratagems of Iblis, and clarifying the meaning of deception and delusion.
- As for the remaining chapters, he mentioned Iblis's deception in beliefs and religions, and among scholars and worshippers of various classes.
- Ibn al-Jawzi extensively refuted the Sufis, dedicating more than half of the book to them.
- As for Ighathat Al-Lahfan, Ibn al-Qayyim focused on heart diseases and their treatment. He dedicated most of his book to the stratagems of Satan against man.
