البداية والنهاية) مصنف موسوعي مشهور، يشرح الأحداث التاريخية من مبدأ الخليقة حتى عصر المؤلف، وحظيت هذه الطبعة السادسة (21) مجلداً، بعدة جهود جماعية متضافرة من التصحيح والتعديل والتنقيح في مضمون الكتاب، والاقتراب بمادته العلمية إلى الاكتمال، والوصول إلى ما أراده المؤلف (الحافظ ابن كثير) رحمه الله فيما كتبه أو أملاه، بموضوعية وحرفية. كما حظيت بالمقابلة على نسخ خطية موثوقة، وتفصيل النصوص وترقيمها، مع ضبط الأحاديث والآثار والبلدان وغير ذلك.
كما تم إعادة تحقيق الجزء السادس عشر، وإضافة حوادث وأخبار ووفيات ست سنوات، لينتهي الكتاب في شهر شعبان سنة 774 هـ، بعد توافر مخطوطة نفيسة، تلافت ما وقع فيه من اضطراب ونقص.
كما اهتم المحققون بتخريج الأحاديث النبوية الواردة، وشرح الكلمات، مع التوثيق من المصادر المعتمدة.
ثم ختم الكتاب بأربعة أجزاء اشتملت على الفهارس العلمية الوافرة..
