Cocoa Butter comes from the seeds (beans) of the cocoa tree. The beans are found inside very large pods that grow on the trunk of the tree. To make cocoa butter, the beans are removed and placed in the sun. There, the remnants of the pulp on the seeds ferment. This gives the cocoa seeds their characteristic bitter taste. After fermenting for some days, the seeds are dried for weeks and then roasted. The roasted seeds are crushed with a hydraulic press. Finally, the cocoa butter is extracted by subjecting the crushed seed matter to heat and allowing the butter to filter out.
Cocoa Butter Benefits
Antioxidants: Cocoa butter is high in antioxidants which help fight off free radicals damage to the skin. Free radicals can cause skin ageing, dark patches, and even dull skin. Protecting your skin from free radical damage is a must if you want healthy and young looking skin.
Stretch Mark Reducer
Deep Hydration: Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids and hydrates the skin deeply making it a wonderful addition to body moisturizers and lip balms.
Sensitive Skin Healer: Again, no guarantees, but cocoa butter has been noted to help skin irritations such as eczema and dermatitis.
Increase Hair Quality: Aside from the delicious aroma of cocoa, cocoa butter can also help to moisturize your hair, helping to improve its general appearance and strength. Cocoa butter has also been linked to a lower incidence of dandruff and healthier hair follicle beds, thereby reducing hair loss and preventing the onset of male pattern baldness.
Skin Health: The antioxidant qualities of cocoa butter certainly take care of most signs of ageing, but cocoa butter also provides a barrier for the skin that will protect it from outside agents as well. The antioxidants and beneficial organic molecules protect the skin from environmental, internal, and external forces that can cause irritation or damage to the skin.
Using Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter melts at skin temperature but is rather hard at lower temperatures, but put a piece of butter in your palm and it will soon start melting. This is why it makes a great additive to products like lip balm. Cocoa butter helps to keep lip balm thick but melts and moisturizes deeply upon touching lips.
